For more than 70 years, Humane World for Animals—formerly called the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International—has been a leader of the animal protection movement, tackling the root causes of animal cruelty and suffering to drive permanent change and create a better world for all animals around the globe.
FWC has admitted that the proposed black bear hunt is not for population control. It’s about giving special interests the chance to kill bears. That’s not science, that's not conservation, it's trophy hunting. We must demand better for "our" wildlife. "Conservation" must evolve beyond human-centered utility.

Destiny's Story
Destiny was a victim of extreme neglect and abuse—left outside without food, water, advanced heartworm positive,  could hardly walk, severe dental disease, suffering from a Mast Cell Tumor larger than a melon hanging heavily in-between her legs, and used solely for breeding. Despite six reports  over a two year span from neighbors, no action was taken by the City Animal Control Director, and no charges have been filed against her original owners. When she was finally rescued and adopted by a loving family, her condition was too severe to overcome. On March 12th, 2025, Destiny succumbed to the effects of prolonged abuse and neglect.
Destiny’s case is not an isolated incident. Too many animals suffer due to weak laws and lack of enforcement. Studies show a direct link between animal abuse and violent crime, making this an issue that affects not only animals but society as a whole.

​Lucy has been at the Edmonton Valley Zoo for 48 years and turns 50 this year. This is an ominous milestone as zoo elephants rarely survive to their mid forties. Lucy suffers from a number of zoo induced ailments which will shorten her life expectancy. She has no other elephant companions, which is considered cruel by elephant experts due to their highly complex social needs. The harsh Edmonton climate is detrimental to her health and painful for her ongoing arthritis and foot disease. Lucy lives in a tiny concrete cell and is only allowed outdoors for short controlled walks, weather permitting which means many days she never gets out at all.
